Ron Higdon has developed a reputation as one of the nation’s top assistant coaches, earning a tremendous amount of respect from his colleagues and wrestlers alike.
Higdon is now in his 17th seasn as the right-hand man for Head Coach Mike Denney.
During his stint, Higdon has been instrumental to the success of a program that has racked up incredible numbers. The Mavericks have won three national championships, placed second four times, finished third on six occasions and in the top ten 16-straight years. In addition, UNO has won the NCAA Regional/North Central Conference title six times.
Higdon has also assisted in the development of 19 NCAA individual champions, 100 All-Americans and 127 national qualifiers, as well as 79 NWCA Academic All-Americans.
Higdon is in his 11th year of teaching at UNO and is the athletic department’s facilities coordinator. He serves as a manager for game-day events and set up throughout the school year.
A state champion at Caprock High School in Amarillo, Texas, he began his collegiate career at Garden City Community College in Kansas where he earned All-American honors in 1987. He was also named to the national junior college team.
Recruited by Coach Mike Denney to UNO in 1987, Higdon finished his career as a Maverick and earned All-American honors with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA II tournament.
He received his bachelor’s degree in math and physical education from UNO in 1996 and in 2001 earned his master’s degree in recreation administration.
Higdon is also involved with USA Wrestling’s National Coaches Education Program and is a silver level certified and a bronze level instructor for the program.
Higdon is married to the former Sandy Derby, an All-American in track at UNO, who is the Compliance Director and Academic Coordinator for the UNO Athletic Department. The Higdons have a daughter Kalee, born June of 2004 and a son, Ryder, born in January of 2008.
